Triodos Bank was named ‘Most Active Lead Arranger’ for 2020 in the report from independent analyst Clean Energy Pipeline, in recognition of its commitment to volume of deals rather than simply their size.

Here, we explore a selection of exciting and innovative energy projects from across the world, which have all recently been supported either by lending from Triodos Bank or investments made by Triodos Investment Management.

HYGRO: an innovative hydrogen turbine

A hydrogen turbine is a wind turbine in which an electrolysis system is connected directly to the source. This integration makes it possible for the turbine to produce green power as well as green hydrogen in a highly efficient manner.

Funding by Triodos Groenfonds (a Triodos Investment Management fund) and Triodos Bank helped hydrogen developer HYGRO to begin the construction of such a turbine, at the ECN Windturbine Test Site Wieringermeer, in the north of the Netherlands. The project is seen as an important step in making green hydrogen affordable, and so accelerating the energy transition.

MorVolts: community hydropower against the odds

Triodos Bank is proud to support community energy schemes, which often power change in more ways than one. Morvern Community Development Company is one such example: its MorVolts hydro scheme is expected to generate enough energy to power over 1,000 homes, and all profits from the project will be channelled back into the community to support local development priorities. Morvern is a picturesque peninsula in the west of Scotland, but it faces challenges to maintain a sustainable community in such a remote rural location. Triodos Bank financed the scheme alongside funding from the Scottish Investment Bank.

EStor-Lux: a collaborative project boosting energy storage development

Energy storage is a vital part of a decarbonised energy system. It’s important that electricity provision remains stable even though supply from renewable sources might be intermittent, since we can’t rely on it always been sunny or windy, for example. In Belgium, Triodos Bank recently financed part of the construction of a 10MW energy storage system. The project has been developed by a consortium, EStor-Lux, that includes public and private partners, and who hope that it will pave the way for the development of larger scale projects.

ASHPAM: domestic air source heat pumps

In addition to generating renewable electricity, we must also decarbonise the way that we heat our homes if we are to drive down greenhouse gas emissions. Triodos has financed ASHP Asset Management (or ASHPAM), which specialises in the installation of air source heat pumps for domestic properties.

Fourth Partner Energy: solar installations for Indian enterprises

Rooftop solar for industrial and commercial use is a segment that Triodos has invested in via impact funds and its banking activities in European markets for many years. In 2020, Triodos IM’s Groenfonds increased its presence in emerging markets, including investing in a solar rooftop transaction in India, one of the fastest growing energy and solar markets in the world.

Fourth Partner Energy is one of India’s leading solar energy companies, and provides affordable, clean and sustainable energy solutions to commercial and industrial clients through the construction of small and medium scale solar systems. Triodos Groenfonds has participated in a bond to be used for a four-year, local currency loan to Fourth Partner Energy.
